The rockets got cheap. Asia is building what they carry.

For 50 years the price of reaching orbit barely moved — then it fell 97%. But that revolution was about one thing — the rocket — and most of Asia never joined the race. It's building the layers around it — the rovers, the science, the navigation systems, the talent. Let's tune in to what the region actually contributes to space.

Last week I published a piece on how space got 97% cheaper — the collapse in launch costs that reusable rockets set off. That price crash was a tide that lifted every boat, this region's included: cheap access is a big reason the Asian space industry took off. (I made a video on exactly how it happened.)

But notice what Asia did with that opening. The region's contribution to space was never really the rocket — it's everything the cheaper rocket now carries. Stop measuring "winning space" by launch cost alone, and a different map appears — one where Asia is quietly ahead.

The rovers are Asian

Start with what's actually driving around up there. China's Yutu-2, dropped on the far side of the Moon in 2019, is the longest-operating lunar rover in history — still crawling years past its design life. India's Pragyan rolled out at the lunar south pole in 2023 and confirmed sulfur in the soil. Japan's SLIM dropped two tiny hopping rovers that photographed their own lander. Australia is building one for NASA's Artemis program. And on Mars, China's Zhurong made it only the second nation ever to land a working rover — joining a field the US otherwise owns.

Line them up and the lunar pattern is hard to miss: the newest wheels on the Moon, and the longest-lived, are Asian. Mars still belongs to America by a wide margin — but the surface Asia does claim, it earned not by launching the most rockets, but by building the things the rockets carry.

So is the hardest science

The same is true one level up, in the missions that are genuinely difficult. Only three times in history has a spacecraft brought a piece of an asteroid back to Earth — and two of those were Japanese: Hayabusa in 2010, Hayabusa2 in 2020, with carbon-rich grains from a rock 300 million kilometres away. And China's Chang'e missions are the only ones to have returned Moon samples this century — including the first material ever collected from the lunar far side.

Sample return is the graduate exam of spaceflight: you have to land, grab, and leave, perfectly, with no second try. Asia is topping that exam — quietly, and mostly off the front pages.

And the infrastructure underneath

Then there's the layer nobody notices until it's gone: positioning. America's GPS is the pioneer and still the world's default — but it's no longer alone. Of the six satellite-navigation systems now operating, three are Asian-built: China's BeiDou, a full global rival to GPS, plus India's NavIC and Japan's QZSS covering their own regions. That's sovereign infrastructure a few billion people rely on — built so the region isn't wholly dependent on someone else's signal.

And BeiDou does something America's GPS can't. Standard GPS is one-way: the satellite talks, your phone listens and works out where it is. BeiDou added a second channel — your receiver can send a short message back up through the satellite, not just read its location off it. In its home region, its denser satellite coverage already matches or beats GPS on availability — and then it does the thing GPS doesn't. For a region like this one, it's really cool and not to mention life saving. A fishing boat past mobile range can signal its position and an SOS. When a flood or earthquake takes down the cell towers — as they regularly do across the region — BeiDou terminals keep a channel open. Positioning and a lifeline in one system, built by Asia, for the ground Asia lives on.

Add the downstream applications — Earth observation for agriculture, disaster response, maritime tracking — and a picture forms of a region that treats space as a utility, not just something nice to have. India makes the point sharpest of all: it soft-landed near the lunar south pole on a $75 million budget. Frugal engineering and deep talent, not brute-force spending, are the regional signature — the same thesis we heard from Dr. Bidushi Bhattacharya and the lunar regolith simulant makers in Australia.

What Asia can't do — yet

Now the honest half, because a region brief that only flatters is useless.

Asia does not, today, have a cheap reusable rocket. China came closest this month, recovering a booster at sea for the first time — a real milestone, and still roughly a decade behind SpaceX, with an order-of-magnitude price gap expected to hold to 2030. Everyone else is further back.

And Asia has not built a mega-constellation — which is the expensive gap, for three reasons. A swarm of thousands of low-orbiting satellites beaming broadband is the single biggest money-maker in space today; Starlink, with more than 9,400 satellites up, is what pays for SpaceX. It's also a land grab — the best low orbits and the radio spectrum around them are finite, and Starlink has already claimed the prime shells; latecomers inherit worse slots or none. And it's strategic: a country whose internet backbone rides on someone else's constellation has handed away a slice of its sovereignty — as Ukraine discovered when a single provider's call shaped what its military could do in wartime. China sees all three and is racing to field its own; the rest of Asia is barely in the game.

Underneath both gaps sits the money. The Asian sector runs on patient state capital, not venture funding, and no regional launch provider has yet turned a profit. That's what keeps much of Asia renting its access from the region that can launch cheaply.

So the shape of it: cheap launch opened the door, and most of Asia walked through it carrying something other than a rocket — the vehicles, the science, the infrastructure that access is for. China is the one player trying to build the door itself too.

Three headlines and a lie

Three of these are real. One I made up. Which? Answer at the bottom.

  • Japan's Hayabusa2 returned the first-ever samples from beneath an asteroid's surface.
  • China's Yutu-2 is the longest-operating lunar rover in history.
  • India's NavIC provides navigation across India and 1,500 km beyond its borders.
  • Indonesia launched Southeast Asia's first crewed spaceflight in 2025.

What to do with this

  • Investors — stop scoring Asian space on launch metrics; you'll misprice it. The regional edge is rovers, sensors, science payloads, navigation and applications — the picks-and-shovels of everyone's Moon and Mars plans. Back the capability layer.
  • Founders — you don't need to build a rocket to matter here. The region's proven lane is what flies on the rocket and what runs on the ground. Play where Asia already wins.
  • Policymakers — the dependency is the risk. A space program with world-class rovers but no affordable launch is a tenant, not an owner. The strategic question is whether to buy launch or build it.
  • Precious subscribers — next time "who's winning space" comes up, ask winning at what? On launch, it's America. On the surface of the Moon, on asteroid science, on navigation — look east.

Cheap launch opened space to everyone, and one region is using that opening to build the other 90% of what a space economy actually needs. Asia isn't racing America to the launch pad. It's quietly assembling everything that makes the launch pad worth having.

(The lie: the Indonesia one. No Southeast Asian nation has flown a crewed mission — human spaceflight remains one of the things Asia, outside China, still doesn't do.)
